Petition against Canadian Pension Plan investments supporting Burma's abuses

Petition to Hon. Jim Flaherty, Federal Finance Minister, to adopt an ethical code of conduct in Canada Pension Plan (CPP) investments

Dear Minister:

We, the undersigned residents of Canada, draw your attention to the following issues:

Despite Canada’s measures on Burma including trade sanctions and investment bans, seventeen million working Canadians are unknowingly supporting the repressive regime in Burma through their contributions to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

Although these sanctions are the strongest in the world, CPP continues to hold more than 1.2 billion dollars worth of shares in both Canadian and non-Canadian companies currently doing business in Burma. These include but are not limited to: Total, Chevron, and Daewoo.

We believe that CPP’s investments are unethical and that investing in these Canadian and non-Canadian corporations are tantamount to supporting the corrupt and repressive regime in Burma.

We, as Canadians who highly value fundamental rights and democratic freedoms, do not support the investment decisions made by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB).

Therefore, we call upon you, the Hon. Jim Flaherty, to take action. We would specifically urge you to carry out the following actions:

  1. Review public funds currently invested in companies linked to Burma
  2. Adopt a code of conduct for ethical investing within the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) that would specifically take into consideration unethical funding towards the repressive military regime in Burma.

As a citizen of Canada, I strongly support this petition against the Canadian Penion Plan investments supporting Burma's military junta.
